Nurse Manager OBY GYNE
JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of this role is to provide leadership, direction and operational management to the clinical and support staff in the development and delivery of services. This post supports the corporate accountabilities of the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nursing Officer by ensuring that there are clear and effective structures and processes designed for coordinated decisions that achieve the Board’s strategy for safe, effective, person centered care and business development and delivery.
The post holder is responsible for promoting the nursing units assigned to them, both internally and externally, as areas where patients and relatives will receive the highest standard of clinical care taking into account national standards and statutory requirements and the professional accountability of staff.
As part of the Senior Nursing Team, the post holder will provide professional leadership and management for the Department of Nursing so that all appropriate professional standards are met, and ensure that the Department of Nursing is effectively developed, organised and integrated with other professional and support departments to achieve the strategic aims and values of Al Zahra Hospital Dubai (AZHD).
The post holder will provide professional expertise in their specialist area and promote high levels of competence in this area through developing policies, setting standards and educating, training and motivating staff to adhere to these.
Development/Education
Through the hospital appraisal and competency system, the post holder will work with individuals to maximise their potential through objective setting, in order that their personal and professional objectives reflect the overall objectives of their Units. S/he will ensure that all staff have yearly appraisals and will identify developmental needs of staff and build required finances into the budget plan where appropriate.
The post holder will develop and co-ordinate a recruitment strategy for their area of responsibility which supports the overall nursing recruitment program.
Develop, and manage staff within the areas managed by the post holder and create an open, supportive and positive culture to maximize their potential, ensure efficiency and
effectiveness in achieving all aspects within the Strategy for Nursing, and ensure that customer care is developed which responds to the needs of patients and their families.
The post holder will actively participate in/promote educational activities across the organisation, most particularly in the areas of nursing and customer care.
The post holder will have a Personal Work Plan and identify training needs as required to the Chief Nursing Officer
Quality Standards
In collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer, Quality Manager and other Hospital Managers, the Board’s Quality Strategy and Joint Commission International (JCI) Standards will be interpreted and implemented through a variety of clinical, professional and operational initiatives.
The post holder will work with colleagues and staff within their designated department to implement appropriate Quality and Risk Management standards so that the organisation may be assured that the security and quality of clinical services delivered conform with standards developed by Joint Commission International Accreditation standards and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA)
The post holder will work with colleagues and staff within his/her designated department to implement and monitor appropriate Clinical Effectiveness, Patient Safety Standards and Infection Prevention and Control standards and in partnership with all appropriate (clinical, non-clinical and) managerial interests, ensure that effective clinical and non clinical risk management processes are developed and implemented, within his/her designated areas, to eliminate or reduce potential hazards and safeguard the security of clinical services.
The post holder is key to the formulation and implementation of clinical, nursing and administration policies and procedures relating to the Department of Nursing.
Risk & Safety
The post holder is responsible for the interpretation and execution AZHD’s Risk and Safety policies within the nursing areas, and as a member of senior staff, report any concerns to the Health & Safety Officer, Chief Operating Officer or Chief Nursing Officer
Strategic Role
The post holder participates in the Department of Nursing ‘Strategy for Nursing’ by being an active participant in ongoing projects and initiatives. S/he will be responsible for including and encouraging all nursing staff in activities related to the profession, through personal work plans.
The post holder will work with the Chief Nursing Officer to demonstrate and exemplify positive behaviors and attitudes and establish effective working relationships with interdependent functions, services and other agencies, which will support co-operative and partnership working.
The post holder complies with the requirements of the registration and advisory bodies within nursing and of the wider hospital arena DHA
Research
The post holder will support and may participate in clinical and nursing research. S/he will encourage utilization of research findings to improve patient care within the parameters of the unit budget. S/he has responsibility for ensuring that current practice within the nursing department in his/her remit is evidence based
Practice
The post holder ensures the delivery of patient care based on standards of care agreed throughout the organisation and in line with national/international standards. S/he will work with the multidisciplinary team to achieve a high standard of patient care.
This role may occasionally require a clinical remit and the post holder will require to
maintain skills in looking after all aspects of dependent patients within the area for which
s/he is recruited.
Time Allocation
It is likely that eighty per cent of the job function will be spent on the managerial aspects of the role as outlined above, with the remainder of time providing a supportive clinical and educational role. However the demands of the service can be unpredictable and this percentage of time allocation will change from time to time.

To be sufficiently influential on the behavior of others over whom the post holder
has responsibility and for those for whom the post holder has no formal authority to
achieve and embed the highest possible standards of risk assessment,

Dealing with patient/carer complaints
Dealing with interruptions in meeting deadlines and moving from one task to another responding
to unpredictable work situations or producing urgent reports or information.

The post requires high levels of specialist knowledge and skills combined with excellent interpersonal skills to engage others and influence their practice and behavior. Proven leadership skills and experience are essential.
The post holder must be a registered nurse or midwife, educated to at least degree level, preferably with a post basic qualification in area of specialism. Must have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible nursing management experience, the majority of which should have been acquired in the acute hospital environment. The post requires a high level of professional knowledge and skills combined with well-developed interpersonal and operational management skills and a supportive, visible leadership style. The post holder should be willing to function at strategic level in collaboration with the Senior Management Team. The post holder must have the stature to earn the confidence and respect necessary to effectively deliver the agenda of major change and will therefore be able to demonstrate previous successful management experience.
