Role Overview

Perform electrical physical design including cable trench/raceway design, equipment location and layout, conduit and aboveground raceway design, preparation of cable schedules, design of lighting, grounding layout, grounding designs/calculations, and lightning protection systems.

This individual will be working under the direction of a lead engineer.  Responsibilities also include the production and standardization of physical design and other standard deliverables related to physical design of electrical power distribution systems on Oil/Gas/Petrochemicals projects.

Layout drawings for electrical equipment



Underground raceway (ductbank)



Above ground tray and conduit



Raceway supports and hangers



Grounding and Lightning Protection



Hazardous area classification and associated physical design criteria



Preparation of 3D electrical model



Job Skills



Should be knowledgeable in the applicable codes and standards within the industry and familiar with construction and startup practices.



Must be a self-starter and capable of independent creative design, with minimal supervision/direction, using Bechtel and industry proven concepts, and procedures.  Must work well with others, other disciplines, and groups.



Shall be capable of working independently on design projects or directing the technical work of others



Ensures compliance with approved design standards in own work and by those assigned, to provide quality design.



Reviews and checks calculations, design models, drawings and design documents prepared by assigned designers/drafters for quality, accuracy, neatness, functionality and satisfactory completion.



Is responsible for the accuracy of bulk material quantity take-offs and material requisitions for materials applicable to the discipline.



Works with designers in other disciplines to coordinate overall design and technical requirements.



Develops work plans, budgets, and schedules for basic designer tasks based on input and direction from supervisor in designated discipline.



Answers questions from client or construction group on design scope within assigned responsibility.



Provides on-the-job training for personnel within assigned lead responsibility.



Generates 2D drawings or 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) design models of high complexity with minimal guidance from others.

Job Knowledge



Familiarity with relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides



Skill in reading, interpreting and using related documents and drawings prepared by other project groups.



Knowledge of the application of engineering and construction materials related to the discipline?s design responsibilities.



Knowledge of the methods and procedures used for procurement, takeoffs and control of bulk materials assigned to the discipline.



Good knowledge of industry and regulatory standards, design criteria and codes relevant to the discipline.



Knowledge of mathematical formulae, design calculations and computer application used in the discipline.



General knowledge of technical responsibilities of other groups associated with the total design effort.



Skill in directing the technical work of less experienced designers and/or drafters.



Reproduction methods used by the discipline.



Qualified Designer with recognised degrees or specialised courses in drafting, design and engineering practices



Must have indepth/detailed related electrical design experience



Hands-on use or extensive working knowledge of using industry wide electrical design/drafting tools, such as CAD 2D (Microstation V8) and 3D electrical model design platform (PDS).



Experience with SmartPlant 3D is desirable



Experience with an electronic Cable Management System



Experience with Microsoft office programs (particularly Word and Excel)



Extensive knowledge and application of international codes and standards



Excellent oral and written communications skills



Demonstrated skill in a lead role
