Lecturer – Bachelor of Design

Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) is seeking exceptional Faculty for the role of Lecturer, to teach in the Design Foundation (year one) of the Bachelor of Design degree program. The four-year program will commence in September 2018.

Successful candidates will be responsible for the development and delivery of engaging and innovative course content. Experience and interest should focus on delivery of design thinking, creative problem solving, and cross disciplinary work. Applicants should have excellent fabrication skills as well as a theoretical, conceptual design perspective, and an advanced understanding of visualization and fabrication processes.

Applicants should be creatives, engaged in their industry, ideally with a minimum of three-years experience as evidenced through a body of creative work, as well as researcher’s familiar with advanced research methodologies that pertain to visual, creative and critical thinking.  Faculty must hold a Master’s degree or higher in a design-related field, as well as a strong portfolio of design work, or the equivalent peer-reviewed and published papers.

We are looking for experience in teaching courses in a higher education context, with considered and creative pedagogical thinking and delivery within the creative fields. A history of curriculum writing and the development of individualized and innovative course curricula would be an advantage.

Further responsibilities will include student support and motivation, supervision and evaluation of student work, assigning grades, and advising on academic achievement.

Person Specification

• Minimum Master’s degree in a field of Art and Design from a top tier academic institution.
• Ideally a minimum of three years professional experience in a design field which demonstrates the ability to take concept through development and implementation to market.
• Teaching experience in higher education.
• A visionary with an entrepreneurial mindset.
• Ability to stimulate and inspire students with engaging pedagogic approaches.
• A body of design research, physical or theoretical, which demonstrates an ability to conceptualize novel approaches towards design.
• A cross-disciplinary practitioner that works well in a collaborative environment in practice and research.
• Broad based knowledge of material, space and the materials systems relative to the manufacturing process.
• Technical prowess utilizing advanced digital design, visualization and fabrication processes.
• Ability to establish relationships with industry to integrate research with international practices.
• Ability to navigate between and interface with 2D, 3D and 4D processes and thinking as evidenced through a body of creative or scholarly work.
• An interdisciplinary approach to design through the engagement of scholarship, which includes social practice, service design, and collaboration.
• A working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, as demonstrated through a body of creative work or courses taught.
• Understanding of and sensitivy to the UAE/GCC culture.
• Keen interest to work in a start-up environment, and ability to see opportunity in challenge.
