Project Director
MWH, now part of Stantec, is currently seeking a Project Director to oversee the construction of a minimum 10 m diameter tunnel in Dubai.
The Project Director role is a key role in maximising the performance of the Business and is focused in three principal areas:
Business discipline – to ensure that projects under their control are effectively monitored and managed on, time, cost and delivered to the required technical standard and functionality. This is management of project delivery risk for both client and MWH.
Customer Relationship Management (CRM) – To make the client group select MWH as the supplier of choice. To build valued and long-lasting relationships with clients which makes them advocates for your service and that of MWH. CRM expectations of a Project Director extend to new clients through the business development functions in the role.
Build High-Performing Teams – It is through effective leadership and teamwork that projects are delivered. The Project Director must identify and develop their team (in the wider MWH sense) to sustain empowered behaviours and display the characteristics of a high-performing team, which is inclusive and not exclusive.
Key Tasks:
Effective Business discipline
Manage on scope, time and cost controls on a portfolio of projects so that MWH profitability expectations do not erode through the life of the project.
Pro-actively manages project delivery risk (across a portfolio of projects) to ensure MWH achieves all success criteria (identified by Project Director at onset).
Ensures project variance control is actively managed and clients kept well informed of change consequences prior to change occurring. Proactively manage invoicing and aged debt situations to keep aligned to contract terms and within BU DSO targets.
Instill “best practice” methodologies; processes into project team. Use meaningful KPIs to display sustained team progress. Demonstrate linkage to Business KPIs.
Maintains a current knowledge of and complies to best effect with all MWH systems, policies and procedures to support project delivery ensuring the technical quality of the project is managed and delivered.
Pro-actively forward plans resource allocation (month on month to project completion) to optimise staff time inputs and ensure ongoing workload priorities are addressed. Demonstrate link to wider BU resourcing mechanisms and company resource planning.
Provides timely reports on project portfolio performance to ensure BU management team and clients are kept up-to-date on progress and predicted outcomes (time, cost, scope).
Demonstrate keen understanding of the contract Terms & conditions to leverage win-win outcomes for both MWH and client. Pro-actively manage any arising claim situation.
Network internally (across MWH globally) to support the effective implementation of wider business initiatives. Network externally (such as PMI, APM etc) to continue to drive up Project Management skills and expertise in MWH.
Excellent Customer Relationship Management
Develop a deep understanding of the client organisation, people, culture, procurement and business processes.
Focus on understanding the client’s real business needs and objectives and monitoring/delivering the project outcomes to meet these. Check regularly for client feedback and any change in need focus. Establish independent channels to collect feedback.
Establish and maintain regular client communication (verbal / written), ensures all key stakeholders have effective and on-going engagement in the project.
Offers client, as appropriate, process improvements, innovation and knowledge of the relevant Industry sector. This provides MWH the opportunity to expand the brief and bring valuable service offerings to the client.
Maintains and demonstrates a detailed understanding of both MWH range of services and commercial considerations. Manages bids and tender submissions when required.
Feedback to BU and wider company Marketing group(s) CRM KPIs and client intelligence to keep the zipper plan fresh.
Building and sustaining a High-Performance Team
Adapting leadership style to analyse the team alignment and give it mission objectives across a portfolio of projects/inputs that align with MWH Business Objectives.
Provide motivational, visible leadership to direct and support the team during its formative stages.
Change style into a coaching / mentoring mode as team develops.
Provide effective team communication regarding performance KPIs and achievement of its mission.
Maintain and sustain the team focus and the individuals so that they can develop as fully-empowered team members while supporting individual technical development
Ensure team close-down is handled with due care and staff are properly re-allocated.
Recognise and work closely with wider MWH team to establish and manage expectations – BUL; PMCL; PTLs; Project Controllers; Project Accountants; ResourceNet; CSMs etc. – ensuring that project solutions are delivered with the right balance of performance, risk and cost under the commercial terms.

The candidate must meet the criteria set out by the client, which is as follows:
- BSc Civil Engineering
- 20-25 years experience, minimum of 10 years in the GCC.
- Tunneling for large diameters experience is a MUST.
- Chartered or has other Professional Accreditation is preferred.
- The ability to manage a heavy workload, with a close attention to detail.
- Excellent computer skills.
- A customer-focused approach, possessing impressive communication skills.
- The ability to work autonomously, reviewing your work on a regular basis while consistently meeting your objectives and the capabilities to meet tight deadlines.
- Committed to working with all levels of management on a daily and ongoing basis.
- A proactive approach, working effectively in co-ordinating activities and complex tasks, taking professional responsibility in all matters.
